Are you in favour of the smoking ban that will take effect on 1 July 2007 in England?

From 1 July 2007, smoking will be prohibited in all pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants, theatres, cinemas, offices, shopping centres and other public places in England. Are you in favour of this?

Please state whether you yourself are a smoker.

Firstly let me just say that I am a cigarette smoker. But I haven't smoked a cigarette since 1987.

We have had this ban in Scotland for a long time now, and the pubs did not lose money, in fact life went on just the same.

Only difference is that the cigarette smokers have to stand in the pouring, freezing rain if they want to indulge their filthy habit.

Mind you, as most of them would be willing to stand naked and up to their armpits in a barrel of shite if it was the only way they could have a cigarette, this does not seem to bother them.

Yes, but what as a smoker I don't like is the persecution, the way it's going from governments, councils, unions (unison), any smoker whether they are trying to give up or not are having to tolerate. Also 'smokers' that I've spoke to have been willing to compromise, and smoke well away from others, but NO, it smells, so do drugs %26amp; alcohol, even a tiny tot, or wee dram.

Perhaps having read unisons' latest hand clapping over smoking bans, we smokers should be made to wear a yellow star of David stitched on to our clothes and regestar with all authorities, after all like the Jews in the 1930's we smell, cause serious %26amp; fatal illnesses, lepers %26amp; leeches to society etc. Better still why not gas us all, then you would see just how much the so call charity 'ASH' creams off you the tax payer, 锟? million in no-smoking ad.s, how many NHS beds?, pathetic little ads for drink %26amp; drugs.

Well it would certainly solve the unemployment problem, but immigrants would still be needed to work because drink %26amp; drug addled mind of those remaining.

Try being in casulty at night on a weekend, because some T**T who's had a 'tot' wrecks a family car, Nevermind about the people inside, sorry bits of them, then 'alckie' takes swing at people trying to help. While you're helping, because you can't let go of someones severed artery, a pompous little sh*t of perhaps one of the above spots a packet of cigrettes in your pocket and then and there starts to give you a lecture about the evils of smoking. So don't say about smokers to me, as for the figures banded about, at the rate 'smokers' are killing off the popullation you'll need all the immigrants to fill the jobs?
Excellent choice. The U.S. should ban it. Come on democrats, if your good for anything. enact this ban.
Totally in favour of this. Am a non-smoker myself and fed-up of going out down the pub in freshly laundered clothes and clean hair and coming home stinking of fags!!

Went to Scotland last year and was pleased to see some bars that were non-smoking - despite what people say this does not drive people away from pubs, it helps people to quit and keeps non smokers happy (and clean)!!
no im not in favour, but it wont stop me smoking, i went to ireland where its banned all ready didnt bother me then, so i cant see it bothering me here either.
Yes...disgusting smokers..
Ex-smoker. In favour. I found it very hard to give up, and wish I'd never had that first one, which I wouldn't if smoking hadn't been the 'done' thing. The world would be a better place if there was no such thing as smoking. But every culture seems to have narcotics of one form or another. We'll just have to stick with moderate alcohol consumption, 'til that's banned!
already in place in scotland and im not a smoker but i think it should not have been a comlete ban.
I am not a smoker so definately in favour of this. It is a hard fact that passive smoking kills and therefore I don't see any reason why my health should be put at risk by the dirty habits of others.

I read recently that smoking is linked to around 50% of all 'natural' deaths worldwide (the figures are much greater in Asia compared to the west) so it is quite right that the government take action and bring in bans.

And to all those people who argue that their granny has smoked 20-a-day and has lived to 100, I had a friend who died recently aged 32 from lung cancer caused by smoking - complete waste of a life and people actually pay to do this - astonishing.
I'm not a smoker and I can't wait until I can go for a drink in a bar or eat in a restaurant without coming out smelling like an ashtray! So I am in favour of the ban - lets follow Irelands example!
I am currently giving up after 32 years of smoking. It will be good for me and help me in staying OFF the cigarettes xxx
as a non-smoker this is great for me

however, people should have the right to smoke if they want to ONLY if it doesn't irritate others -- which is highly difficult to avoid

smoking is unhealthy anyway it's probably a good time for you to quit
yep coz its been in scotland since mothers day and a few months in england and i think it will be abolished so i can smoke in the pub again
I smoke the occasional cigar but will not smoke inside as I am aware that not everyone lokes the smell. I am all in favour of the ban. I believe that allowing people to smoke in "smoking areas" of pubs and restuarants is like allowing someone to p*ss in the shallow end of a swimming pool.
i am a smoker and i am in favour, it will make me smoke less i have children and i dont smoke around them, infact they dont even know i smoke, it is a very good idea
Yes.It helped me to quit in Canada.I go to the bar and don't think 'bout it anymore.
I was a smoker for many years and now I have chronic bronchitis. I have trained my body to reject smoke now. It makes me gag. We have had these smoking laws for some time now. At first restaurants lost money. But most of them have filled back up again. I think it's a great idea. Personally, I think tobacco should be banned. Look at it like slow suicide or attempted murder.

The tobacco companies should lose all their profits for getting half the planet addicted to such garbage. They need to stop killing people for greed and pay dearly.

Tobacco farmers should grow different crops or lose their farms. I have no sympathy for any of them.
I am a smoker, and i think the ban is a great idea. Not only will it help alot of people to cut down but also it will reduce the stink you get on your cloths and hair from sitting in pubs.
I am a smoker, and wish they would outlaw all tobacco products completely in the US. Sure would make it easier to quit, when the cigarette companies are continuously raising the nicotine content!
D*mn right! Good on yer Parliment, mate! Yo, I smoked fer 25 years, so don't gimme no whine. I quit and so can you Limeys! By the way - get the H*ll out of Ireland!
We've had the smoking ban in Scotland since last March and it's definitely made a difference to my pub use. It's a pleasure to sit in a pub and not come home smelling like an old ashtray. I do however have to fight my way in through a fog of smoke as the smokeres tend to congregate outside the pub door. Many pubs have built special shelters outside to accommodate smokers, although it can be very chilly in the winter. Maybe some pubs are also using patio heaters, which contribute to global warming so there's always a downside. All things considered, thumbs up o a smoking ban
I am not a smoker.

Everyone is aware of the negative health effect of smoking and second-hand smoke. Since obtaining cigarettes are not going to be illegal, it is only right that it is banned in areas that may affect non-smokers. It is sort of like drunk driving laws. It is okay to drink and get drunk, but it is not okay to get behind the wheel drunk because people could get hurt. These laws are about protecting the innocent or in this case, the non-smoker from ill effects.
I don't smoke and am all for this ban. Apart from the health aspect I hate going out the pub and coming home stinking of cigarette smoke. Also I find cigarette smoke can set me off into a coughing which is really not nice and rather uncomfortable for everyone not just me!
NONONONONONONONNONONONONONONONONONONONON...
non smoker and yes
I am in favour of it being banned in places such as bars, restaurants ect ect.... i hate it when some tosser sparks up as soon as they've finished eating and makes everyone around them feel ill!

As for clubs, i think it will be too hard to enforce what with people generally being wasted and just being used to being able to do it!

I dont personally smoke fags and any other smoke that may be in/exhaled cannot be in public anyway ;)
I am not a smoker. I live in Scotland and we have had the ban for a while now and, in my opinion, it is 100% successful. It is now enjoyable to go out whereas in the past it triggered off my asthma, made my clothes and hair stink and was altogether thoroughly unpleasant. I used to make a point of wearing clothes that could be washed as opposed to dry cleaned. Pubs are now a joy to go to and are just as full as before the ban, but now the clientele is all the people would could not go before due to the smoke.

Alas, not in my lifetime, but I hope that cigarettes will become illegal one day.

I don't go for all that crap about the smoker's right to smoke. What about the non-smoker's right to breathe?

I think the smokers look pathetic huddled in doorways sucking away on their cancer sticks.
I am not a smoker (anymore) %26amp; i do agree with the ban because i know from personal experience that when you are trying to give up %26amp; someone is smoking near you, it does make it extremely difficult. I think that it will do wonders for this environment %26amp; it may even help people to quit smoking. The sooner they bring it into the whole of the UK the better. It really annoys me when i go out for the evening whether it be to the theatre, cinema, pub or restaurant %26amp; there are people around me smoking. I hate smelling of smoke %26amp; it actually makes me feel sick when i smell smoke now. The only reason i stoppped was because my Grandfather (who was my best friend) died of lung cancer (%26amp; a brain tumour) due to smoking. I wish it would come in sooner, because if it saves just 1 person from dying of anything due to Smoking it will be worth it!
I was a smoker, but now I am not. I am in favour, and highly delighted that the ban in Wales comes into effect on April 2nd. I wonder why not April 1st?
Yes, SMOKING KILLS (http://www.smokekills.org/)

I'm a non-smoker.
i am a smoker yet i do not need to be told were and when to smoke so no i am not in favour of this
