What major should i study in??????

i want to become a set designer. Whether its for a theater or a t.v. set. I'm thinking that majoring into interior designing would work best but i'm not sure.

i was looking at Fullerton states majors and i saw one that is Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts and you theres different things you can concentrate on like dance, acting, and production. I was thinking i might be interested in the production part. I looked up the classes i might need to take if i go into that and ACTING is one of the classes. I mean, the whole reason i want to become a set designer is because i like the BEHIND THE SCENES...

also, what are some other jobs that are behind the scenes for a theater or t.v. movie/show. Other than directer, producer, and camera man.

thanks =)

If you want to be a set designer for TV or theatre, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre would probably be your best preparation. It will teach you the technical aspects of theatre that you would need, as well as the history of theatre, makeup, stagecraft, etc. to work in the theatre.

You mention that you want to work behind the scenes, and that you would have to take acting, and I can see how you feel this is unnecessary, since you want to be offstage. However, those that major in acting DO have to take Stagecraft - they have to learn how to make costumes and build sets - every theatre major learns the full gamut, because theatre is a multidisciplinary art form - you're basically a team player if you major in this.

If you want to work in theatre, you could also work on the business side of it, selling tickets, promoting the show, etc.

You could be a costume designer or work in hair and makeup, helping the actors get ready for the show. You could be a lighting designer, and that is a job that you could do for theatre or in concert venues. If you've ever been to one of Elton John's concerts, lighting is a huge aspect of his performances. And if you love the entire art form of theatre, you could teach high school theatre- you will definitely have to be acquainted with every part of the discipine to run a high school production.

If you want to work in TV, you could major in Radio/Television, and be an anchor on TV, reporter, or you could write the stories that are aired.

A good way to test a potential major is to try getting paid for the work. If you live near an amusement park, working on the crew of stage shows is a great experience to see if theatre as a career is a good choice. You get paid for it, it's fun, and you learn a lot. Also, some parks have Halloween attractions coming up, so you can try to get a job there as an actor, technician, or makeup artist- that will give you a better idea as to what you should do long-term.

Break a leg!
