Can he really give me this ticket??

I was driving in the parking lot of the movie theatre, and drove past a man and a woman. Anyway, I parked my car and was on my way to walk into the movie theatre and the man and woman I drove past came running after me, and the man started yelling at the top of his lungs to stop. So I did. He stated that he was a police officer and that I was driving like a lunatic in the parking lot, and that I almost ran him and his girlfriend over. He did not show me a badge nor was he in uniform. He had on a navy blue T-shirt with blue jeans. I honestly don't know if he was a police officer or not.

He also yelled at me (so loudly that he had people looking at us) and called me a "freaking liar" when I told him that I was not driving that fast. He also yelled at me, "that I could've killed a kid if they were walking here, but not that I probably didn't freaking care anyway", and yes he did use these exact words. He was very rude and disrespectful to me. In addition, I did apologize to the man and woman if I was driving that fast but the man yelled back "that he didn't care, and that he didn't want to hear it".

I was very calm, and did not talk back to him. I was opening my purse to give him my license and registration but he said not to because he was going to mail me a "reckless driving ticket so that I can get 5 points on my license, and that I was crazy". He said, "I will be receiving the ticket in the mail". Then he went ahead and ask me if the car I was driving was my car (as if I stole it or something) and whether or not it was registered to me. I told him "yes". He read off my license plate number and walked away.

Can he really give me this ticket??plays

A lot of people have pointed out that this "cop" didn't show his badge to you. That's a pretty good indicator of an imposter, but there is even a better one: A real officer would have immediately requested that you provide your driver's license (and proof of insurance). This serves several purposes: (1) it allows the officer to ensure that you have a valid DL; (2) it ensures that you do not have any outstanding arrest warrants; (3) it ensures that the vehicle is insured; and, most importantly, (4) it allows the officer to IDENTIFY YOU.

If he doesn't identify you who you are, he can't issue you a ticket. [And if he simply issues a ticket to the registered owner of the vehicle after running the license plate, he will not be able to prove your identity in court]

I wouldn't expect a ticket from this particular encounter...

Can he really give me this ticket??opera ticket opera theater"Sources: prosecutor" means that the person who answered your question is a prosecutor. I seriously doubt you will get a ticket at all. So don't worry about it. Report It

I'm sorry please don't take this the wrong way...BUT ARE YOU AN IDIOT?? you dont know for sure if he's a cop but your willing to hand over information like where you live??? This guy was clearly unhinged and I think that you are very lucky he didnt take the info and come to your house whilst you sleep....you should never give out info to someone who claims they are a police officer but cant show you proper identification to prove it if they are not in uniform and behing the wheel of a cop car.......please please please be more careful and i'm not talking about just your driving..although I think in a parking lot at night you should hav eyour lights on...kids can get away from their parents quickly and you migt be able to react quicker in better light......
I would suggest calling the local police and reporting exactly what happened. If he were who he claimed to be he would have showed you a shield because cops always carry ID even when off duty. Impersonating a police officer is a crime, and the odds are hes probably already done it to other people. Dont worry about a ticket, it would not be worth the paper that its printed on.
no you were on private property.
I would call the police now!!! This guys mostlikely was NOT a cop and now he has all your personal infromation.
You been had. What an Ahole.
Sounds like a real jerk was having fun with you. Don't worry about it.
LOL! sounds like you got had..... If he was an police he would have showed you a badge.... II know a lot of police officers, a lot of C.O's Federal and state, and not one of them leaves the house with out their badge or gun.....

Next time that happens, Ask his name and ask to see his badge, then tell him to call an officer "On Duty" Now what he may have been was an 911 dispatcher.... who has cop friends and will run your plate.. or he may be trying to rob your house, once he gets your info.....
I wouldn't believe this one he didn't show you a badge if he was an officer of the law he has to show you his badge. I honestly think it was some random guy messing with you. He probably didn't have anything better to do. If I were you and you end up with a ticket in the mail which I honestly don't think you will fight it take him to court. Tell the judge that he didn't show you his badge and he wasn't in uniform. Also tell the judge that he didn't even want to see your drivers license and registration. This will prove a case against the supposed officer of the law. If you had a friend with you at the time bring her with you as well. Good luck to you and I personally wouldn't even think about it.
He can give you the ticket.

But he wont

A) I'm having my suspicious about him actually being an officer

B) Once he cools down and the shock of allegedly being hit wears off he wont be as hot to trot if you will

C) That's a lot of paperwork for a trip tp the movies. Most officers won't take the time.

D) Cops deal with dozens of plates a shift, without writting yours down, he wont remember it after the movie *probably

If he was a cop, he was trying to intimadate you to try and get you to be mindful of the road.

Iaf he wasn't he needs to get off his high horse and put some money where his mouth is.

So ya, anyway you look at it, I wouldn't expect a ticket, but if it does come, pay up or go to court if you really feel lucky...
All officers are required to show their ID. You just been had, How long have you stayed awake worrying about that ticket in the mail. Ain't you heard about the check is in the mail. You must have just gotten your license. Get some sleep and stop worrying. If he sends you a ticket I'll put the check in the mail for you.
UUUHHHHGGG!! So typical!!! I think he was really just showing off and flexing nuts ifo his girlfriend!!! I would not worry about it... especially if he did not give a badge number or advise what agency he worked for. He sounds incredibly unprofessional!!!! He is probably not even a cop... maybe he just told his girl that so she would sweat him, like so many woman sweat cops... God knows why!!!!
NO WAY. Any professional officer would not have behaved like that.

In addition, if he couldn't produce a badge, then he most likely was not a police officer. He didn't even accept your license and registration-- which I'm pretty sure is a prequisite when a cop gives out traffic violations.
I wouldn't worry about it...sounds like the guy was a jerk!!!

If he was a real officer he would have to show you his badge and what not....
FIRST - In many jurisdictions you can get a ticket for reckless driving, particularly driving that potentially endangers pedestrians or other drivers. It usually does come with points off the license.

SECOND - It is possible to get a ticket via mail based on your license plate and registration. I have gotten one for driving too fast on a street that had cameras and my appeal options were very limited.

HOWEVER (aka THIRD) - I have some doubts as to whether this was a real police officer (though his confirming that the car you were driving was yours and registered to you seems to support that he was an actual cop...he wasn't checking to see if you stole it, it would be to make sure the ticket went to the right place--and, if he was off duty, he wouldn't be carrying his ticketing paperwork so it makes sense that he would go that route), but even if he was his behavior was not acceptable. In the future, know he has an obligation to give you his badge number and tell you what department he works for (local police, state troppers, etc.). Even if you don't get his badge, you can start calling around with his description to the local forces and file a complaint. While this would not have automatically negated his "word" on the ticket, it would have given you strong grounds to have it voided.

All that said, even if he is a cop, he had to be mad enough to remember your license number, keep it around until work the next day, and then start ticket paperwork--assuming the ticket is approved on his word alone. He may be real, but you might not get a ticket anyway.

Seems like you weren't driving all that crazy so this is ridiculous, but if you were driving a little to fast, or didn't see them because they were in dark clothing and it was night, it's a good, if bizarre, lesson to learn and apply to keep yourself safe and on the legal side of things when you drive in the future.
